When thinking of any stimulating drink on a daily basis, many people will opt for a cup of coffee. When enjoyed in moderation, this hot beverage can have many positive effects.
Coffee made its way through Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was first drunk for breakfast or as part of breakfast, and later more and more with other meals. The popularity of coffee is based mainly on its stimulating effect. This effect of coffee can be attributed essentially to the caffeine and chlorogenic acids.

Caffeine content in coffee
A coffee bean contains between 0.8% and 2.5% of caffeine. The caffeine content in coffee is also determined by the contact time of water with coffee powder. As for the effects on health, there is no risk when drank no more than four cups a day. Despite all efforts, it has not yet been possible to establish a complete balance of all components of the coffee, because its chemical composition is extremely complex and depends on a variety of factors.
Coffee has a stimulating effect on the blood circulation. When drinking coffee, blood vessels are dilated, heart rate increases and the circulation in all organs is improved. Caffeine also affects our respiratory center - it accelerates breathing and expands the bronchial vessels. Caffeine also acts as a diuretic and leads to increased urination (diuretic effect). In general, one can say - coffee boosts the entire metabolism. In addition, it increases the calorie consumption, but this is no problem for people with normal weight.
Coffee makes you happy
A coffee bean has an amazing effect on our gray brain cells: when drinking coffee, the brain circulation is increased - and thus the concentration. The speed of reaction and receptiveness of our brains also increases. Coffee is a "wake-up" drink- after a cup of coffee we become more attentive and concentrated. Coffee makes you more creative, intelligent and enduring, which does not necessarily mean that it will rob you of sleep - contrary to popular belief.
A big advantage of coffee: there is no caffeine addiction in the sense of an addiction known to the medicine. The stimulating effect lasts about 30 to 45 minutes after drinking a cup of coffee. Recent studies have shown that the best effect is to consume caffeine in small doses throughout the day rather than a large cup in the morning.

Who can benefit from drinking coffee?
Coffee lifts up the mood, promotes a good mood and ...
  • Seniors benefit from better cerebral circulation and can often fall asleep more easily with an evening cup of coffee .
  • Caffeine has a vasodilating effect, which is why it is also used pharmaceutically: against headache, asthma, heart failure, morphine poisoning.
  • Those who like to drink coffee and worry about their cholesterol need to know that it all depends on how coffee is prepared and served. The consumption of filtered coffee has no effect on blood lipid levels. Only with unfiltered variants (eg. espresso) do substances that influence the cholesterol level enter the body.
  • Recent research shows that regular consumption of coffee reduces the risk of getting gallstones by 25 percent. Roasted substances in coffee act as so-called antioxidants. The chlorogenic acid in coffee may prevent colon and liver cancer .
  • Coffee can also be a "digestive aid". A coffee or espresso after eating stimulates production of gastric acid and bile secretion, so the stomach and intestines start functioning better.
  • It is well known that caffeine can improve endurance and performance during physical activity. The "awakening" effect and stimulation of breathing by the coffee can be useful for athletes. Caffeinated drinks should be drunk before training, but are not suitable as a fluid replacement after exercise.
Coffee: unhealthy effect when...
Caffeine also has negative effects, but only when consumed in higher doses. In large doses it can cause tremor, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, and under certain circumstances can also lead to anxiety attacks. People who are extremely sensitive to the effects of caffeine can suffer from sleep disorders or upset stomach. On the other hand, others can tolerate large amounts of caffeine without any problems.
  • Coffee is an "acid stimulator", which means that it stimulates gastric juice production. So if you have a sensitive stomach or are already suffering from any stomach problem in relation to gastric acid, you should restrict your coffee consumption to two cups a day.
  • Over time, nerve cells get used to the caffeine amounts you are already taking. If the coffee enjoyment is suddenly stopped, headaches can occur. But these wear off after a few days.
  • Nursing mothers or pregnant women should consume coffee only to a small extent. A cup of coffee a day during pregnancy does not harm the unborn child.
  • People with osteoporosis should drink coffee only with milk.
  • If you have serious heart problems, you should talk about your coffee intake with your doctor.
